Career

Mikhail Prokhorov’s rise to wealth began in the early 1990s when he partnered with Vladimir Potanin to manage the holding company Interros.

This partnership led to the controversial 1995 acquisition of Norilsk Nickel through the loans-for-shares privatization program, where state-owned assets were sold at significantly reduced prices.

Prokhorov and Potanin used this opportunity to gain control of the company, making it the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium. Prokhorov eventually sold his stake in 2007 for $7.5 billion.

Prokhorov’s financial success expanded beyond Norilsk Nickel. He helped establish MFK, a government depository institution that acquired Soviet assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

He also played a key role in securing 38% of Norilsk Nickel at a loans-for-shares auction in 1995, buying it for just $170.1 million. By his departure, his wealth had significantly grown, and his financial influence continued to expand in various sectors.

In addition to his business ventures, Prokhorov invested in several international projects. He owns two private hospitals in Israel and has funded medical treatments for friends.

Through his foundation, Prokhorov also supported Russian sports, particularly CSKA Moscow’s basketball, hockey, and football clubs.

He later became involved in the sports world on a global scale by purchasing a controlling stake in the New Jersey Nets basketball team in 2009, making him the first non-North American owner in NBA history.

Prokhorov’s political ambitions led him to run for the presidency of Russia in 2012 as an independent candidate.

Though he finished third with nearly 8% of the vote, his candidacy was viewed with scepticism, with some claiming it was a Kremlin manoeuvre to divide liberal votes.

He later formed the Civic Platform party, but his political involvement was short-lived as internal conflicts led him to resign in 2015.

In the years following his political attempt, Prokhorov focused on his business ventures. In 2019, he sold his remaining stake in the Brooklyn Nets, making a substantial profit.

He also became a major investor in Sensorium Corp, a virtual reality company. By 2021, his net worth was estimated at over $14 billion, cementing his place as one of Russia’s wealthiest and most influential figures.
