Odinga attended Kisumu Union Primary, Maranda Primary in Bondo, and Maranda High School until 1962 when he was transferred to Germany by his father.
He spent the next two years at the Herder Institution, which trained foreign students in the German language—he was part of the philological faculty at the University of Leipzig in East Germany.
In 1965, he received a scholarship to attend the Technische Hochschule of Magdeburg (now a part of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg) in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He graduated in 1970 with a certificate in Welding.
Career
Raila Amolo Odinga made significant contributions to the development of Kenya’s economy.
In 1970, he returned to Kenya and founded the Standard Processing Equipment Construction & Erection Ltd, which later became East African Spectre.
This company was the only one in Kenya that manufactured liquid petroleum gas cylinders and played a crucial role in providing affordable and safe cooking tools to the people.
In 1974, Odinga joined the Kenya Bureau of Standards as the group standards manager, and in 1978, he was promoted to deputy director, a position he held until his detention in 1982.
His leadership and expertise in the field of standards and quality control helped to improve the overall quality of products and services in Kenya.
The Raila Amolo Odinga 1982 Kenyan coup attempt was a failed attempt by Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka and a group of soldiers from the Kenya Air Force to overthrow then-president Daniel Arap Moi.
As a result of the attempt, President Moi reorganized Kenya’s security architecture, granting himself emergency powers and placing the provincial administration under his direct control.
Opposition leader Raila Amolo Odinga was accused of being one of the masterminds behind the coup and was arrested and charged with treason.
He was released six years later but was detained again in 1988 and released in 1989. This event marked a significant turning point in Kenyan politics and had lasting effects on the country’s government and leadership.
Raila Amolo Odinga has a controversial past in Kenyan politics. While he has been a prominent figure in the country’s fight for democracy, he has also faced serious accusations and consequences for his actions.
In 1982, Odinga was placed under house arrest for seven months and later charged with treason for his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt against President Daniel Arap Moi.
Although he was eventually released, a biography released 14 years later revealed that Odinga was more involved in the coup than he had previously admitted.
While some called for him to be arrested and charged, the statute of limitations had already passed. His past actions continue to be a topic of debate and controversy in Kenya.
