He is the governor of the Oyo State in southwest Nigeria. He is an expert in gas and liquid metering and an engineer.

He is the group managing director of Makon Group Limited, an indigenous oil and gas business in Nigeria.

After years of work experience with significant oil and gas companies, he launched Makon Engineering and Technical Services (METS), his first oil and gas private company, in 1997 when he was 29 years old.

Early Life

Makinde was born on December 25, 1967, to the late Pa Olatubosun Makinde, a well-known educator turned accountant, and Madam Abigail Makinde of Aigbofa Compound in Oja’ba, Ibadan. He is the family’s third kid.

Makinde started his education at St. Paul Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan, and completed it there. He finished his secondary education at Bishop Phillips Academy in Monatan, Ibadan.

His enrollment at the University of Lagos (Unilag) began in 1985, and he graduated with a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from there.

Oluwaseyi received training in the Safety Shutdown System at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas in 1998, and Development of Analytical Competence for Managing Operations at Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University) in 1999.

He received automation training in 2000. In 2002, he attended Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, England, to study Fundamentals of Crude Sampling.

He also studied Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States in 2005.

Career

Makinde completed his NYSC with the Nigerian Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), where he subsequently worked as a trainee engineer.

He had several positions between 1990 and 1992, managing and taking part in several key projects. He served as a field engineer (Eket operations) for Rebold International Limited from 1992 to 1997. In 1995, he was promoted to field manager.

Makinde established his own business, Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS), in 1997 after spending five years (1992–1997) serving as the Engineering Manager for various international oil and gas corporations (IOCs). He is currently the Group Managing Director of the Makon Group of Companies.

Makinde belongs to the International Society of Automation (ISA), the Institute of Measurement and Control UK, the American Measurement Institute (AMI), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Oil and Gas Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN), and the Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Political Background

On the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Makinde stood for the Oyo South senatorial seat in 2007, but Kamoru Adedibu of the Peoples Democratic Party beat him.

Despite his initial failure, Makinde persisted and ran for the Oyo South Senatorial seat in the People’s Democratic Party in 2010. However, he was defeated in the primary by the current Oyo South Senator.

Makinde ran for governor of Oyo State in 2015 on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform in 2014.

Following the end of the party’s primary election in December 2014, he was denied the governorship candidacy ticket.

Makinde, on the other hand, remained true to his desires and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). On the SDP platform, he unsuccessfully campaigned for governor of Oyo State in 2015.

Engineer Seyi Makinde rejoined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after long, in-depth, and wide engagements with national officials, Social Democratic Party elders and leaders in Oyo State, and a variety of strategic partners inside Oyo State.



He asserted that he joined the PDP not for personal gain, but for the development of the state through finding long-term answers to the state’s numerous difficulties.

Makinde was elected as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for Oyo State in the 2019 general elections after receiving 2772 votes in the primary election held at Liberty Stadium, Oke-Ado in Ibadan on September 29, 2018.

Makinde received 515, 621 votes on March 9, 2019, surpassing his nearest challenger, Mr Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressive Party, who received 357,982 votes.

During the general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won. Mr Seyi Makinde was elected Governor of Oyo State in the 2019 Oyo State Gubernatorial Elections, which took place on March 9th, 2019.

Seyi Makinde was sworn in as the 28th executive Governor of Oyo State on May 29, 2019.
