He is the son of Ir. KPN. Soetarjo Soerjosoemarno, a prominent figure from the Mangkunegaran Javanese nobility and an expert in topography and geodesy, and Dolly Zegerius, a Dutch-descendant competitive bridge player who later became an Indonesian citizen. Yapto’s older sister, Marini Soerjosoemarno, is an Indonesian actress.
