Zandile Gumede, a notable figure in South Africa, was born on May 12, 1961, in Amaoti, a small township in Inanda, just north of Durban. Growing up amidst twelve siblings in the Majola family, she was nurtured by her parents’ care and support.

Career

Subsequently, she served as a PR councillor for two terms before becoming an Amaoti. Additionally, she was treasurer in the eThekwini Municipality from 2007 to 2015.

Following her election in 2016, Gumede assumed the mantle of Executive Mayor of eThekwini. She dedicated herself to enhancing service delivery, fostering economic growth, and creating employment opportunities throughout her tenure. Moreover, she spearheaded various initiatives to empower women and youth within the community.

However, Zandile Gumede‘s time as mayor was subject to controversy. In 2018, she encountered legal challenges when arrested on charges of alleged fraud and corruption related to a waste management agreement valued at R320 million. Consequently, she was temporarily suspended from the ANC and resigned from her mayoral position in 2019.
