Brent Barry was born on December 31, 1971, in Hempstead, New York. He is the son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry and Pam Hale. He has four brothers—Scooter, Jon, Drew, and Canyon—all of whom have been involved in basketball, and a sister named Shannon.
Barry attended De La Salle High School in Concord, California, before enrolling at Oregon State University. At Oregon State, he redshirted his freshman year and then played four years for the Beavers basketball team. Barry graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.

Brent Barry was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets and was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.
He played for the Clippers until 1998, showcasing his skills as a shooting guard. Barry then had brief stints with the Miami Heat and Chicago Bulls before joining the Seattle SuperSonics in 1999.
During his time with the SuperSonics, he achieved a career-high average of 14.4 points per game in the 2001–02 season. In 2004, Barry signed with the San Antonio Spurs, where he contributed to two NBA championships in 2005 and 2007. He concluded his playing career with the Houston Rockets, retiring in 2009 after 14 seasons in the NBA.
