Early Life
Dirk Werner Nowitzki was born in Würzburg, Germany. His father, Jörg–Werner, played handball and represented Germany at the highest international level.
His mother, Helga Nowitzki (née Bredenbröcker), was a professional basketball player. Silke Nowitzki, his older sister, is currently employed by the NBA in international TV. She was a local track and field champion before turning to basketball.
As a tall child, Nowitzki frequently towered above his classmates by a foot or more. At first, he played handball and tennis.
