Early Life And Education

Kenneth S. Hitchcock was born to Ray and Jan Hitchcock on December 17, 1951, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Ray worked at the Imperial Oil refinery, while Jan was employed at CBC.

Tragically, Ray passed away from cancer when Ken was 14, and Jan followed suit, succumbing to cancer when Ken was 27.

These losses left Ken to navigate much of his life independently. He has a brother named Mark Hitchcock.

Career

Ken Hitchcock began his career as a hockey player in Western Canada, but he truly excelled in coaching.

Starting at the grassroots level in Edmonton, he made an immediate impact, notably coaching the midget AAA Sherwood Park Chain Gang. Under his leadership, Sherwood Park achieved an impressive 575–69 record.

Hitchcock also shared his knowledge by teaching hockey fundamentals at a local school for girls, further establishing himself as a skilled motivator.

In 1984, Hitchcock took his first primary coaching job with the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers. During his six-season tenure, he led the team to four division titles and two league championships.

He was named WHL Coach of the Year twice and earned recognition as the top Canadian central junior coach in 1990.

Despite strong performances, the Blazers never advanced past the semi-finals of the Memorial Cup, but Hitchcock’s 291–125–15 record remains one of the best in league history.

Hitchcock transitioned to the NHL in 1990, starting as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers. He later moved to the IHL, coaching the Kalamazoo Wings before becoming the head coach of the Dallas Stars in 1996.

Hitchcock led the Stars to playoff appearances and a Stanley Cup victory 1999. However, after some internal struggles, he was dismissed midway through the 2001–02 season but quickly returned to the Flyers as head coach, helping them reach the playoffs again.

In 2006, after a rocky start to the Flyers’ season, Hitchcock was fired but was soon hired by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In 2009, he reached the milestone of 1,000 career games as an NHL head coach. However, in 2010, he was relieved of his duties with Columbus and took on a coaching role with the St. Louis Blues in 2011.

Under Hitchcock, the Blues had a successful run, culminating in his win of the Jack Adams Award in 2012. He was fired by the Blues in 2017, just before setting a milestone for career wins.
