Early Life and Education

Stephen William Hansen was born on May 7, 1959, in Mosgiel, New Zealand. He was raised by his parents, Desmond Hansen and Lauriss Hansen, who were dairy farmers on the Taieri Plain. The names of any siblings he may have had are unknown to the media.

Career

Steve Hansen began his coaching career with the Canterbury provincial rugby union team in New Zealand, leading them to victory in the National Provincial Championship in 1997 and 2001. He also served as an assistant coach for the Canterbury Crusaders Super Rugby team from 1999 to 2001.
