Stephen William Hansen was born on May 7, 1959, in Mosgiel, New Zealand. He was raised by his parents, Desmond Hansen and Lauriss Hansen, who were dairy farmers on the Taieri Plain. The names of any siblings he may have had are unknown to the media.

He also served as an assistant coach for the Canterbury Crusaders Super Rugby team from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, Hansen became the head coach of the Wales national team, though his tenure there had mixed results.
In 2004, Hansen joined the coaching staff of the New Zealand All Blacks under Graham Henry. He later took over as the head coach of the All Blacks in 2012, leading them to victory in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
