After retiring as a jockey, Walsh became a racehorse trainer. He earned international acclaim for training Papillon, which won the 2000 English Grand National, and Commanche Court, which won the Irish Grand National, both ridden by his son Ruby Walsh.
Commanche Court also earned Ted Walsh a Triumph Hurdle win and placed second in the 2002 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Walsh trained Rince Ri, which won two Ericsson Chases, including a Pillar Chase and a Power Gold Cup.
He also trained Jack High to finish second in the 2005 Irish Grand National and later win the Betfred Gold Cup. In the 2012 English Grand National, he trained Seabass, which finished third and was ridden by his daughter Katie Walsh.
