Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards KNH KCN OBE OOC was born on 7 March 1952 in Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. He is the son of Malcom Richards and Gretel Richards, and has two brothers: Mervyn Richards, a former international footballer and cricketer, and Donald Richards, who played first-class cricket.

Richards attended St. John’s Boys Primary School and received a scholarship to Antigua Grammar School, where he developed his athletic talents. Viv Richards is of Black Caribbean ethnicity, specifically Antiguan, and he practised Christianity as his religion.

Career

Viv Richards made his first-class debut in January 1972 at the young age of 19. This debut came in a non-competition match, where he represented the Leeward Islands against the Windwards, scoring 20 and 26 runs. Just two years later, in 1974, Richards went on to make his highly anticipated Test debut against India, along with fellow West Indian great Gordon Greenidge.

The best years of Richards‘ illustrious career were between 1976 and 1983, where he averaged a remarkable 66.51 with the bat in Test cricket. During this peak period, he established himself as one of the most dominant and feared batsmen in the world. However, in 1984, Richards suffered from a condition called pterygium and had to undergo eye surgery, which unfortunately affected his eyesight and reflexes.

Despite this setback, Richards remained one of the best batsmen in the world for the remaining four years of his career, though his average in the second half was significantly lower than the first. In his overall Test career, he scored an impressive 8,540 runs in 121 matches at an average of 50.23, surpassing the previous aggregate record held by the legendary Garfield Sobers.

As a captain, Richards led the West Indies team to great success, winning 27 of his 50 Test matches and losing just 8. His captainship skills, combined with his unparalleled batting prowess, cemented his status as one of the all-time greats of the game.
