Drug Lord Luis Grijalba Caught Through Wife’s Social Media Vacation Posts

Luis Manuel Picado Grijalba, a notorious drug kingpin known as “Shock,” was arrested by US and UK authorities in London on December 29, 2024, near London Bridge. The arrest was made possible by the unintentional social media activity of his wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez.

Grijalba, 43, had been under investigation by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for months, accused of orchestrating cocaine shipments from Limón, Costa Rica, to the United States. The breakthrough came when Rodriguez shared photos of their luxurious European vacation on social media. Images from landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Trevi Fountain in Rome, and high-end European hotels provided critical clues that revealed Grijalba‘s location.

Using these posts, the DEA and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) secured an international arrest warrant. Grijalba, known for his discreet travel habits, was caught off-guard during the trip, which was meant to celebrate the New Year. The couple had spent approximately $20,000 on plane tickets for the vacation, which instead led to Grijalba’s downfall.

Grijalba is now contesting extradition to the US, where he faces serious drug trafficking charges. His case has garnered widespread attention due to the unusual circumstances of his capture. Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department director, Randall Zúñiga, emphasized the arrest’s importance, noting Grijalba’s ties to drug trafficking in Limón. While there were no direct charges against him in Costa Rica at the time, his capture represents a significant blow to international drug operations.
