Governor Umo Eno Appoints Daughter Helen as Acting First Lady Following Wife’s Passing

October 6, 2024 0 Posted By Kaptain Kush

Following the passing of his wife, Pastor Patience Eno, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has appointed his daughter, Helen Eno-Obareki, as the acting First Lady. This decision was made during a condolence visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to the Eno family in Uyo.

Governor Eno highlighted the importance of sustaining the initiatives led by his late wife, particularly her flagship project, the Golden Initiative For All (GIFA). He remarked, “To ensure the continuity of the Office of the First Lady and my late wife’s work, I am presenting our daughter, Helen, to carry on the responsibilities of the office,” expressing his determination to uphold his wife’s legacy through Helen‘s leadership.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu commended the appointment, drawing parallels with practices in other countries, such as the U.S., where family members often take on roles to preserve a predecessor’s legacy. This move guarantees that Pastor Patience Eno’s initiatives will continue uninterrupted following her passing on September 26, 2024, after a brief illness.

Governor Eno shared personal reflections on his late wife, recalling their early years of marriage when she was 19 and he was 22. Though deeply affected by her loss, he expressed confidence in Helen’s capability to lead the office’s programs in collaboration with the Deputy Governor and the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare.

The appointment has sparked broader discussions about the involvement of family members in public roles traditionally held by spouses of political leaders in Nigeria. Some critics have questioned whether this approach aligns with meritocratic principles, while supporters argue that it ensures continuity for key community and welfare projects.

Despite this period of mourning and transition, the Akwa Ibom State government remains fully operational. Governor Eno has reassured the public that governance will continue uninterrupted. In the meantime, President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries have extended their condolences, offering their support to the Eno family during this challenging time.
