Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Impeached Over N43.5bn Fraud Allegations

The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, following allegations of misappropriating N43.5 billion, purportedly allocated for procuring backup vehicles for lawmakers.

Assembly members unanimously cited gross misconduct and abuse of office as the grounds for their swift decision. The controversy centers on the alleged misuse of public funds for what many perceive as extravagant expenditures, especially amid ongoing challenges in Lagos’ public services.

In the wake of Obasa’s removal, Mrs. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, Deputy Speaker and representative of Apapa Constituency 1, has been sworn in as the new Speaker. Some view her appointment as a step toward restoring accountability and trust in the Assembly.
