Mia Le Roux Makes History as First Deaf Miss South Africa

At the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, Mia Le Roux made history by being crowned Miss South Africa 2024. She became the first deaf woman to win the prestigious title. The 28-year-old model and marketing manager from Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, triumphed over nine other finalists to claim the crown.

Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one-year-old, Le Roux attributes her success to the unwavering support of her community, who helped her gain the ability to hear. This experience has fueled her passion for positively impacting and breaking barriers. In her acceptance speech, Le Roux said, “I am a proudly South African deaf woman and I know what it feels like to be excluded. I hope my victory will inspire those who feel marginalized to pursue their wildest dreams, just as I have.”

Le Roux‘s win comes after a competition marked by controversy, including the withdrawal of finalist Chidimma Adetshina, who stepped down amid allegations that her mother may have stolen the identity of a South African woman. Adetshina had been the focus of a social media uproar, with many questioning her eligibility to represent South Africa.

Despite the surrounding controversy, Le Roux‘s victory has been widely celebrated. Deaf South Africa praised her achievement, with Jabaar Cassiem Mohamed, the Western Cape Director for Deaf SA, stating, “It’s heartwarming to see a person living with a disability succeed in a national pageant.”

Currently a part-time BCom Marketing student, Le Roux balances her studies with her work as a model and marketing manager. Her journey to the crown included a standout performance on the reality show “Crown Chasers,” where she impressed viewers by winning multiple episodes.

As Miss South Africa 2024, Le Roux is determined to use her platform to inspire others and advocate for change. “I am ready to serve and represent my country with pride and integrity,” she affirmed.
