The boxing world is in shock after the sudden passing of Nigerian fighter Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, a former National and West African light-heavyweight champion.

The 40-year-old collapsed in the ring during a match in Ghana on Saturday, March 29, 2025, leaving fans, fellow boxers, and the entire West African sports community devastated.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Olanrewaju was a respected and admired athlete known for his strength, resilience, and love for the sport. Over his professional career, he fought 24 matches, securing 13 victories—12 by knockout—alongside 8 losses and 2 draws.

He proudly held both the National and West African light-heavyweight titles, proving himself a true warrior in the ring. One of his biggest career highlights came in 2019, when he delivered a stunning third-round knockout against national champion Adewale “Masevex” Masebinu. It showcased his power, skill, and determination.

When tragedy struck, Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena. He appeared to control the fight, leading on points as the third round neared its end.

With just 15 seconds remaining, something went terribly wrong. After exchanging punches with Mbanugu, Olanrewaju staggered backward, leaned against the ropes, and then collapsed onto the canvas. The referee initially thought it was a knockdown and started a count, but it soon became clear that he was in serious distress.

Medical staff rushed into the ring, removing his mouthguard and attempting to revive him as he struggled to breathe. Despite their efforts, he remained unresponsive and was quickly taken to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. Sadly, doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival. Preliminary reports suggest he may have suffered cardiac arrest, but an official cause has yet to be confirmed.

A viral video of the fight captures the heartbreaking moment of Olanrewaju’s collapse. Fans watched in horror as he stumbled, slumped against the ropes, and then fell face-down on the mat. The referee’s urgent calls for help and the chaos that followed highlight just how serious the situation was.

While Olanrewaju had enjoyed great success earlier in his career, the past few years had been challenging. He had suffered four consecutive losses leading up to this match, with his last fight taking place on December 24, 2024, against Idowu Raheed in Lagos. Despite the setbacks, he remained a beloved figure in Nigerian boxing, admired for his never-give-up attitude and contributions to the sport.

The news of Olanrewaju’s passing has sent shockwaves through the boxing world, with heartfelt tributes pouring in from fellow fighters, fans, and sports officials. “Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju was a true warrior, a fighter who inspired many in Nigeria and beyond,” a fellow boxer shared on social media. Fans also expressed their sorrow, with one writing, “He died doing what he loved, but it’s heartbreaking to lose such a talented fighter. Rest in peace, champ.”

Olanrewaju’s tragic death is the latest in a string of devastating losses in Nigerian boxing. In 2022, Chukwuemeka Igboanugo collapsed and died during a bout at the National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State. Earlier in 2024, London-based Nigerian boxer Sherif Lawal also passed away after collapsing in the ring during his professional debut.
