Nigerian Music Legend Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu, known affectionately as the “Elegant Stallion,” has tragically passed away at the age of 72. The news of her untimely death has left the nation in mourning as fans and celebrities alike pay tribute to the iconic singer, songwriter, and actress.

According to reports, Onwenu collapsed shortly after performing at the 80th birthday celebration of Stella Chinyelu Okoli, the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, in Lagos. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival. The exact cause of her death has not yet been disclosed.

Onwenu, born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, began her music career in the 1980s and released her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She quickly rose to fame with her soulful voice and socially conscious lyrics, becoming a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene.

Throughout her career, Onwenu released several successful albums and collaborated with renowned artists such as King Sunny Ade. She also made a name for herself in the film industry, starring in movies like “Widow’s Cot” and “Half of a Yellow Sun.”

In addition to her artistic achievements, Onwenu was a respected journalist and politician. She served as the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture chairperson and later became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Onwenu‘s passing has sparked an outpouring of grief and condolences from fans and fellow celebrities on social media. Many have praised her as a trailblazer, a role model, and an inspiration to generations of Nigerian artists.

President Bola Tinubu released a statement expressing his condolences, saying, “Nigeria has lost a true icon, a woman of immense talent and grace. Onyeka Onwenu‘s music and art touched the hearts of millions, and her legacy will live on forever.”

As the nation mourns the loss of this beloved artist, many wonder who will fill the void left by her absence. But one thing is certain: Onyeka Onwenu‘s impact on Nigerian music and culture will never be forgotten.
