June 28, 2024The late John Okafor, affectionately known as Mr. Ibu, continues to resonate across social media and news platforms, not for his comedic prowess this time, but for the final farewell to a cherished icon of Nigerian cinema.
Mr. Ibu, who passed away on March 2, 2024, following a prolonged battle with health challenges, is being laid to rest today, June 28, in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. Videos capturing the solemn event have circulated widely, stirring emotions among fans and colleagues alike.
The funeral rites, which lasted from June 25 to June 30, were a period of introspection and homage to Mr. Ibu‘s life and contributions. Born in Enugu State on October 17, 1961, he starred in over 200 Nollywood films, including the renowned “Mr. Ibu” series that propelled him to fame.
His passing earlier this year elicited an outpouring of sorrow and tributes from fans, fellow actors, and the Nigerian film industry. His battle with health issues, disclosed in October 2023 when he revealed a condition threatening his leg, had deeply concerned his supporters, who rallied with prayers and financial aid for his medical expenses.
To honour Mr Ibu‘s memory, the Actors Guild of Nigeria organized a candlelight procession in Abuja, while Rangers International Football Club and celebrities staged a special football match, commemorating his legacy alongside other departed actors.
