The Nigerian tech community continues to demand justice for Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as TeeJay, co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of Bumpa, who tragically lost his life on March 4 following a reckless driving incident and an alleged disregard for his life.

A petition on Change.org, which had gathered over 13,000 signatures at press time, is calling for Biola Adams-Odutayo to be charged with manslaughter rather than reckless driving and for proof that she remains in Lagos State after allegedly evading accountability.

According to the petition, TeeJay had the right of way and had just left the iFitness gym in Victoria Island when Adams-Odutayo, driving a vehicle with license plate LND 418 JR, entered Ozumba Mbadiwe Road without yielding to oncoming traffic, colliding with him at around 10:20 PM.

Despite wearing full safety gear, TeeJay was knocked unconscious and left sprawled on the road. Witnesses allege that Adams-Odutayo refused to step out of her car to check on him, and when bystanders begged for her assistance, her friend reportedly stated, “She doesn’t want blood to stain her car.”

Although TeeJay was still breathing, Adams-Odutayo—a healthcare professional and Head of Health at a reputable insurance brokering firm—allegedly remained on a phone call for over 30 minutes instead of helping to save his life.

The petition further claims that multiple hospitals refused to admit TeeJay, forcing good Samaritans to return to the accident scene and place him in a minibus. They allegedly forced Adams-Odutayo to accompany them, hoping that her presence would prevent further rejections.

At 11:30 PM, TeeJay’s brother received a call about the accident and rushed to the hospital, where he was informed that TeeJay had just been brought in past midnight. Shortly after arrival, he was declared dead.

Following TeeJay’s death, Adams-Odutayo allegedly walked into the hospital requesting a drip, claiming she was in shock, before attempting to flee the premises.

Although she was initially arrested, the petition claims that she and her family boasted about their “connections” and employed various tactics to influence the case. Instead of a manslaughter charge, the Nigerian police charged her with mere reckless driving, treating TeeJay’s death as little more than a traffic violation.

She was detained for only one night, granted bail at ₦1 million, and met the conditions on the same day. Since then, she has reportedly been at home, enjoying her freedom, prompting public outrage.

With the Lagos State Police yet to provide an official statement, Nigerians are demanding justice for TeeJay and accountability for Adams-Odutayo’s alleged negligence.
