Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, has earned her second Grammy Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, taking home the Best African Music Performance honour for her hit “Love Me Jeje.”

The track, which has surpassed 20 million views on YouTube, triumphed over stiff competition from fellow Nigerian stars such as Burna Boy, Asake, Wizkid, and Yemi Alade, along with Chris Brown‘s “Sensational” featuring Davido and Lojay.

In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Tems expressed deep gratitude, dedicating the award to her mother, whose birthday fell the day after the ceremony. “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team. Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday… I just want to thank you, ma, because she has really done a lot for me and my brother,” she said.

This marks Tems‘ second Grammy; her first came in 2023 for Best Melodic Rap Performance as part of Future‘s “Wait for U,” featuring Drake. In addition to her win, Tems was also nominated for Best Global Music Album for Born in the Wild and Best R&B Song for “Burning” in the same year.

The win has sparked celebrations across social media, with fans and industry figures applauding her achievement and reinforcing her position as a global music icon. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu also praised Tems for bringing national pride to Nigeria once again on the international stage.

Introduced last year, the Best African Music Performance category marks the Grammy’s formal recognition of African music’s growing global influence. Tems‘ victory further highlights Nigeria’s contribution to this musical movement.

Industry professionals and fans alike have noted that this Grammy win strengthens Tems‘ presence in the music world and signals the increasing global recognition of Afrobeats. Nigerian producer George Irabor, known as SirBastien, highlighted how these accolades boost Nigeria’s standing in the global music scene, attracting both investment and attention.

With this victory, Tems continues to build her impressive portfolio of accolades, which includes BET, NAACP Image, and Soul Train Music Awards, solidifying her influence on the global stage.
