U.S. Army Bars Transgender Individuals from Enlisting, Halts Gender Transition Procedures
The U.S. Army has announced it will no longer permit transgender individuals to join its ranks, effectively pausing all new enlistments for those with a history of gender dysphoria. Furthermore, the military branch will immediately stop performing or facilitating any medical procedures related to gender transition for its current service members.
This decision aligns with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump last month. The order aimed at reshaping military policies to prioritize what he described as “military excellence and readiness.” The order explicitly stated that adopting a gender identity inconsistent with one’s biological sex conflicts with the discipline and standards required of military service.

The announcement, made through the U.S. Army’s official social media account, came into effect immediately. It includes a pause on “all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for service members.” However, the Army emphasized that individuals with gender dysphoria who are currently serving will be “treated with dignity and respect,” with further guidance to be provided by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness.
Public reaction has been mixed, with some posts on social media reflecting approval while others decry the move as discriminatory. Recent polls suggest a decline in public support for transgender individuals serving openly in the military, with current support at 58%, down from 71% in 2019.
Legal challenges have already begun, with several transgender service members and civil rights groups filing lawsuits against the executive order, arguing that it infringes on rights and could potentially lead to the discharge of current transgender service members. A federal judge has requested assurances that transgender service members involved in these legal actions will not be removed from service while the lawsuits are pending.
