The black market exchange rate for the US Dollar (USD) to Nigerian Naira (NGN) on April 19, 2025, reflects the volatility of Nigeria’s parallel currency market.

According to currency dealers in major hubs like Lagos and Abuja, the dollar is currently being bought at an average rate of ₦1,600 and sold at around ₦1,615. However, in some locations, selling rates have reached as high as ₦1,620, highlighting the variability across different markets.

Often referred to as the “Aboki” market, the black market remains a crucial channel for currency exchange in Nigeria. It operates outside official regulation, leading to notable differences from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rate, which sits at approximately ₦1,604.93, according to platforms like Wise. This persistent gap underscores ongoing economic pressures—including a limited supply of foreign exchange, high demand for dollars, declining oil revenues, and increasing national debt.

Dealers in Lagos’ Zone 4 market report relative stability in the past week, with the Naira slightly appreciating from a high of ₦1,624.35 on April 12 to a low of ₦1,570.01 on April 17. Despite this, traders note that rates can shift rapidly due to factors such as oil price changes and domestic policy decisions. “Rates fluctuate daily, even hourly. It depends on dollar availability and economic conditions,” one Abuja-based trader said.

Experts advise Nigerians to exercise caution when using the black market, especially for large transactions, due to the risks of fraud and unpredictable pricing. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also recently issued warnings about unregistered digital investment platforms that may affect currency dealings.
