On Thursday, April 3, 2025, the Nigerian Naira showed slight fluctuations against the US Dollar in the parallel market, commonly referred to as the “Aboki” black market.
According to street traders in Lagos’ bustling Zone 4 market and reports from currency exchange platforms, the Naira traded at an average buying rate of ₦1,540 and a selling rate of ₦1,558 per dollar by mid-morning. This marks a marginal shift from the previous day’s rates, which hovered around ₦1,535 to ₦1,550, reflecting ongoing volatility in Nigeria’s informal forex market.

The black market remains a vital lifeline for many Nigerians seeking foreign currency amid restricted access to official channels. Today’s rates indicate a subtle depreciation of the Naira, with traders citing a slight uptick in dollar demand as businesses restock post-Easter.
In Abuja, rates were slightly higher, with dollars bought at ₦1,545 and sold at ₦1,560, while Kano reported similar figures. Economic analysts attribute these movements to seasonal factors and persistent inflationary pressures, despite recent efforts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stabilize the currency through policy interventions.
The gap between the official exchange rate—currently around ₦1,500 per dollar—and the black market persists, driving individuals and small businesses to the parallel market for quicker transactions. “The CBN is trying, but the dollars aren’t flowing as fast as we need,” said Musa Ibrahim, a currency trader in Lagos. “People still come to us because it’s instant.”
As of 9:32 AM WAT, the Naira’s performance against other currencies in the black market included approximately ₦1,907 per British Pound (GBP) and ₦1,676 per Euro (EUR), showing relative stability.
With Nigeria’s economic outlook under scrutiny, traders and citizens alike are watching for potential CBN announcements or forex reserve updates that could influence rates in the coming days. For now, the Aboki market remains a critical barometer of the Naira’s street value on April 3, 2025.
