A renowned comedian, Amy Schumer is once again finding herself at the center of a storm, this time for dubbing the film “The Zone of Interest” as her “movie of the year.” The uproar comes in the wake of Schumer‘s recent criticism regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza.

Sharing a still from the controversial movie on her Instagram account, Schumer praised the performance of actor Daniel Brühl, who portrays Rudolf Höss, a high-ranking Nazi officer stationed at the Auschwitz concentration camp, in the film directed by Jonathan Glazer. The story unfolds around Höss and his wife, Hedwig Hensel, as they attempt to create an idyllic life for their family near the notorious extermination camp.

While Schumer disabled comments on her Instagram post, social media quickly became a battleground for differing opinions. Focusing on one of history’s darkest chapters, the film’s subject matter raised eyebrows and intensified the backlash against Schumer.

The Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA) expressed confusion over the backlash, questioning why promoting a film about the Holocaust would be problematic. A spokesperson for CAA suggested that the negative reactions might stem from discomfort with acknowledging Jewish suffering at the hands of violence or even from a desire to suppress such reminders.

“The reaction to Ms. Schumer‘s post just goes to show why these films still need to be made,” the CAA spokesperson emphasized.

The controversy also drew attention from media analyst and content creator Big Joel, who highlighted Schumer’s previous Instagram story about standing alone as a Jew and criticized her for downplaying the gravity of the current events in Gaza.

While “The Zone of Interest” has garnered mixed reviews, with some labeling it as “Holokitsch” and “vacuous,” others have praised its conceptual audacity and unique approach to depicting the banality of evil during the Holocaust.
