Gypsy Rose Blanchard: A Tragic Tale of Liberation

Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been released early from the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri after serving seven years of a ten-year sentence. Blanchard, now 32, pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in 2015.

The case unfolded as Gypsy Rose, who allegedly endured years of abuse, conspired with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill her mother. Godejohn fatally stabbed Dee Dee Blanchard with a knife provided by her daughter, and the couple fled the scene. They were later apprehended in Wisconsin, where Godejohn lived, and he is currently serving a life sentence without parole.

Dee Dee Blanchard had reportedly subjected her daughter to years of psychological and physical abuse, convincing her and others that Gypsy Rose suffered from various medical conditions. Gypsy Rose, portrayed as having epilepsy, vision impairments, and muscular dystrophy, lived with unnecessary medical treatments and a false portrayal of disabilities. Charities supported Dee Dee‘s claims, and she sought medical treatment from numerous doctors.

During Godejohn‘s trial, Gypsy Rose expressed her desire to be free from her mother’s control, stating, “I talked him into it.” She reached a plea deal with prosecutors, receiving a 10-year sentence in exchange for pleading guilty. While incarcerated, she gave interviews exposing her mother’s abusive behavior, and a memoir written during her time behind bars is set to be published in January.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, Gypsy Rose stated, “Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did. I regret it every single day.”
