Sheikh Jassim’s Manchester United Bid Falls Flat Over Funding Secrecy
January 18, 2024Qatari bidder Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani faced a major setback in his attempt to acquire Manchester United from the Glazer family.
The deal faltered as Sheikh Jassim declined to substantiate the origin of his funds, leading to the Qatari camp’s withdrawal from the takeover race.
The Unveiling
Newly submitted documents to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shed light on the intricacies of the failed acquisition. The Sheikh‘s bid encountered a stumbling block when he failed to respond to the club’s request for proof of his financial backing.
Manchester United urged the Qatari camp to submit “customary financing commitment letters,” a standard procedure in such transactions. Regrettably, Sheikh Jassim‘s revised bids lacked the essential documentation, prompting the club to issue an ultimatum. Failing to meet this requirement, the Qatari bidder opted out of the bidding process.
The Larger Scenario
Sheikh Jassim‘s departure from the race opened the door for Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who successfully secured a 25% minority stake in Manchester United at the end of December. The deal, valued at $1.64 billion (£1.3bn), was finalized on Christmas Eve after Ratcliffe imposed a deadline for the club to accept his offer.
Behind the Scenes
However, recent disclosures indicate that the Glazer family retains the option to potentially oust Ratcliffe from the club 18 months after the completion of his purchase in February.
Post this period, the Glazers may explore a complete sale of Manchester United. While Ratcliffe possesses the first right of refusal to acquire the club, the Glazers reserve the right to sell to a higher bidder, obliging Ratcliffe to relinquish his stake at the original purchase price.
What Lies Ahead for United?
As Manchester United aims to fortify Erik ten Hag‘s squad during the January transfer window, consultations with Ratcliffe become imperative for any potential transfer business. Although the completion of Ratcliffe‘s deal with United is anticipated on February 13, his influence over transfer decisions remains in effect.
