Woodberry Appeals for Reduced Sentence in Fraud Case
January 15, 2024Olalekan Jacob Ponle, widely known as Mr. Woodberry and an associate of Hushpuppi, has filed an appeal with the United States Court of Appeals seeking a reduction in his eight-year prison term. Woodberry, convicted in 2023 for orchestrating multimillion-dollar fraud schemes targeting individuals and businesses, claims that his sentence was inaccurately calculated, according to the latest report by the Peoples Gazette.
Woodberry argues that he is facing unjust imprisonment and an excessively severe restitution order, citing discrepancies in the calculation of both the crimes he intended to commit and those he executed, as outlined in documents from the U.S. Seventh Circuit court.
The convicted fraudster had originally aimed to defraud victims of over $51 million. However, his schemes were thwarted by some vigilant individuals and entities, resulting in a lesser amount of approximately $8 million being scammed. Woodberry was subsequently ordered to pay restitution of $8 million to seven identified victims.
The appeal sheds light on Woodberry‘s assertion that the restitution amount should reflect the damages incurred by the victims rather than the intended fraudulent gains. The legal process will unfold as the U.S. Court of Appeals reviews Woodberry‘s arguments in his pursuit of a reduced jail term.
