In 2001, Hernández joined the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. After being turned down 11 times for astronaut training, NASA finally selected him as an astronaut in May 2004. 

Hernández completed Astronaut Candidate Training in 2006, which included technical briefings, space systems training, and survival training. He was then assigned to the Shuttle Branch to support launch and landing operations.

In 2007, Hernández served as an aquanaut during the NEEMO 12 mission, living and working underwater for 11 days. He continued working on technical assignments until he was selected as a mission specialist for the STS-128 mission, which launched in August 2009.

During the STS-128 mission, Hernández became the first person to use the Spanish language while tweeting from space. The mission ended on September 11, 2009.

In 2023, a film entitled “A Million Miles Away” was released, starring Michael Peña and based on Hernández’s 2012 autobiography “Reaching for the Stars: The Inspiring Story of a Migrant Farmworker Turned Astronaut.”
